City Desk ABQ is a nonprofit mission-driven newsroom. We provide coverage of local news to readers for free thanks to support from readers and local institutions who support our mission.
Nonprofit news outlets are critical to a robust watchdog and in-depth news coverage. They provide the opportunity for journalists to investigate and report on issues with longterm impacts that isn’t hidden behind pay walls or interrupted by advertising.
We are a project of the Citizen Media Group, a New Mexico-based, IRS designated 501c3 nonprofit with a mission to promote and expand local journalism opportunities for readers and journalism professionals.
While our nonprofit status does not allow us to use our platform for traditional advertising, we welcome support from readers and sponsors from businesses and community organizations.

Nonprofit news outlets are critical to a robust watchdog and in-depth news infrastructure.
Our model works a lot like NPR or PBS.
Large sponsorships and gifts provide the ongoing support for major projects and the infrastructure to engage readers and help us generate matching dollars from readers and other supporters.
Readers who are able to support us provide donations that power us day by day.

Founding supporters.
City Desk ABQ was dreamed up over beers by two former political rivals and longtime local news junkies lamenting the loss of news competition in the city they had both served in public office.
Having both served in elected office and taken the heat from more than a few good reporters, they sought a structure that ensured the project would remain journalist-led and free from influence from owners or donors.

Former police officer Darren White rose through the ranks to become state public safety secretary, ABQ’s public safety director and the elected sheriff of Bernalillo County. When not in the political arena, he has exercised his love for news as a reporter for KRQE and as a talk radio host on KKOB.

Also a former police officer, Pat Davis traded in his badge to work on public policy as a progressive political organizer and, later, as a two-term city councilor in ABQ. He is the publisher of a group of local newspapers.
The nonprofit structure of City Desk housed at Citizen Media Group does just that.
